www.springerpub.com/bv

An innovative new journal from Springer Publishing, sponsored by the International Beliefs and Values Institute

What better way is there to understand who we are and why we do what we do than to understand beliefs and values?  A highly innovative and creative journal, Beliefs and Values blazes a new trail by explicitly promoting greater understanding and deeper relations among the peoples of the world.  Congratulations on founding this essential forum.

The International Beliefs and Values Institute is pleased to announce the release of a dynamic new journal from Springer Publishing in New York. Sponsored by the IBAVI, Beliefs and Values: Understanding the Global Implications of Human Nature brings together scholars, educators, practitioners, students, policy makers, and other leaders to consider what beliefs and values are, where they come from, and how they are linked to actions, policies, and practices around the world.  An international and interdisciplinary journal, Beliefs and Values bridges scholarship and application, showcases exemplary people, projects, and programs, and facilitates a greater understanding of self, others, and the world at large.  Through engaging articles and innovative features, Beliefs and Values helps us better understand the global implications of human nature and more effectively address the most pressing issues of our day.

Articles and features address the IBAVI’s six thematic areas of concern in public policy, advocacy, education, and scholarship:

  • conflict resolution
  • human and minority rights
  • sustainability
  • equal treatment and access
  • global education
  • religious and cultural understanding

Reviews of Beliefs and Values

Beliefs and Values: Understanding the Global Implications of Human Nature is a critically important new journal offering a welcome corrective to several decades of scholarship based on the assumption that human beings are driven exclusively by utilitarian motives.  The international economic crisis has demonstrated very profoundly that self interest prevails and pundits acknowledge that many global conflicts are sustained as much by greed as by grievance.  Yet we know too that people can be reciprocal and even altruistic in their mutuality, underpinned by firmly held values and beliefs.  Beliefs and Values provides a timely interdisciplinary platform for scholars and public intellectuals worldwide, whose ideas, analyses and voices we need to hear more urgently now than ever.

The new journal Beliefs and Values moves us in important ways from scholarship to solution.  It accomplishes this important step by creating a space for scholars to apply knowledge to contemporary international issues through interdisciplinary dialogue.  By serving as a bridge for scholars of varying disciplines, Beliefs and Values is able to serve as a platform for innovative ideas that benefit researchers, practitioners, policy-makers, and students.  I am pleased to have been published in such a forward-thinking, globally-conscious, and integrative journal.

Genuinely interdisciplinary research requires that serious thinkers frame their inquiries in terms of what is known in all relevant disciplines. A journal that attracts such serious thinkers is a wonderful thing.  Even more wonderful is a journal in which serious researchers engage with creative persons devoted to finding practical solutions to the biggest problems facing humankind.  Beliefs and Values brings together an unprecedented diversity of serious and creative thinkers dedicated to these vital means and ends.

We humans face urgent global challenges that require us to envision and establish new paradigms for understanding who we are, what we could be, and how we can promote a more just, peaceful, and sustainable world.  By bringing scholars from the humanities, social sciences, and sciences into dialogue with policy makers, educators, students, advocates, and other global leaders, Beliefs and Values creates a vibrant venue through which these crucial issues of our day can be addressed in a thoughtful and complementary manner.  As important, the overarching focus of this journal on the linkage between beliefs and values and actions, policies, and practices is indispensable if we are to understand and facilitate true transformation — social, economic, political, relational, environmental — around the world.
