Art Around the World was designed to enhance primary school education by using art to stimulate holistic learning. A key purpose of the initial phase of the project was to develop an understanding of culturally defined needs and standards of living, as well as the social processes and pressures that generate and mediate those needs. Focusing on over 500 primary school students in Virginia, USA; Kenya, East Africa; and Johannesburg, South Africa during 2005-2008, pilot projects have asked children to depict visually where and how they live. Through their artwork, these students provided insights into how they understand their environments and heritage, make meaning, and assess social justice.
